No one must know the painful reason behind her marriage. She steers clear of attachments—until Henry Lowell, heir to the Viscount Armswell, lands on her operating table after a duel. Charming and wickedly handsome, Lowell is one of London’s most inveterate scoundrels. Yet he may not be all that he appears. But now that duty has finally called on him to marry, he finds himself entranced by the mysterious, independent-minded Viola. Then her late husband’s son returns from overseas, contesting Viola’s inheritance. Lowell longs to help her and sets out to convince Viola that a strategic union may be the best way to save all she holds dear. But can he also persuade her to take a chance on love…?

Ten Kisses To Scandal by Vivienne Lorret

Every author should aspire to write with the same degree of thoughtfulness as Vivien Lorret. Her metaphors are brilliantly crafted, her characters wonderfully compelling and her dialogue so entertaining it will leave the reader enthralled.

Briar Bourne needs a win so she can prove to her sisters and to her uncle that she's just as capable of being a successful matchmaker as they are. Especially after her latest disaster where she accidentally paired a mother with her son, for it did not reflect well on the Bourne Matrimonial Agency. But when she meets Nicholas Blacklowe, the Earl of Edgemont, a daring plan starts to form in her head. What if the notorious rake could help her better understand what draws men and women together and how to determine compatibility?
What harm could there possibly be when he's not at all her type?
Briar is about to find out when he accepts her proposal on one condition: with each piece of advice he gives her, she must submit to a kiss, causing her to realize that she's flirting with the risk of scandal and the very real possibility of losing her heart to a scoundrel.

Nicholas is intrigued by Briar. She is the light to which he is drawn, and although he knows his judgment is skewed where she is concerned, he cannot seem to stop himself from seeking her out. As the two form a closer working relationship, Briar's kisses becomes something more than a payment, leading Nicholas to realize that he must risk being honest about a past transgression, if he is to save the one good thing in his life.

A brilliant page turner. Regency romance lovers are bound to devour this story!

The Lady Is Daring by Megan Frampton

Megan Frampton has once again written a marvelous story filled with humor and romance. This is the third book in The Duke's Daughters series and it was just as wonderful as the previous two!

Lady Ida Howlett wishes she had the courage to be seen as more than just the talkative know-it-all she invariably turns into at social events when she gets nervous. Exhausted by having to attend balls only to watch people's eyes glaze over as soon as she opens her mouth, and by her mother's determination to marry her off to a gentleman whom she knows she'd be miserable with, Ida leaps at the chance to go find her runaway sister when evidence of her location comes to light. To this end, she steals a carriage and sets her course for the north of England, only to discover that she's not alone. Bennett, Lord Carson, the man who was meant to marry two of her sisters until they decided to marry his brother and best friend instead, is with her, and he refuses to let her travel alone.

Bennett is tired and frustrated by the responsibilities of his life and by his father's insistence he marry in order to obtain a large dowry. Especially since his father is the one to blame for the family's depletion of funds. Wishing he could escape from it all, just for a while, he decides to accompany Lady Ida on her adventure to find her sister and bring her home, even though he's never really thought much of the youngest Howlett daughter. In the past, his attention has been on her sisters whom he was courting, while Ida...she always struck him as far too talkative and opinionated - the sort of woman a man would not wish to get trapped with. But as their journey together progresses, he discovers another side to Ida - an amusing, intelligent and vulnerable side she never lets anyone see.

When the two discover their feelings for each other have evolved into something so powerful it cannot be denied, they must decide if they can risk taking a chance on a shared future. Because Ida is not the quiet and reserved Society lady Bennett needs and he won't be able to offer her the peaceful life in a remote cottage that she is convinced she wants.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! It was very entertaining, the dialogue and plot so engaging I found it impossible to put down. This is the sort of book where you simply have to know what happens next. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

For the Duke's Eyes Only by Lenora Bell

Filled with mystery and adventure, this intriguing page turner is one you'll want to sink into your comfiest reading spot with and savor.

Lady India Rochester and Daniel Bonds were destined to marry before they were born. Raised on neighboring estates, their childhood friendship bloomed, turning rapidly into young love. They were inseparable and neither ever considered spending the rest of their life with another.
But then tragedy struck and the two were torn apart, separated and thrust into two entirely different worlds. Their paths wouldn't cross again for years, and once they did, they would be enemies.

So begins For The Duke's Eyes Only, a story of loyalty that never waned, in spite of appearances, for although Indy hates the pompous libertine duke Ravenwood appears to be, he has never stopped loving her and is actually doing his best to protect her and the rest of his family from a dangerous villain. But protecting her in the overbearing, do as I say, kind of way proves difficult when the Rosetta Stone goes missing, for Indy has a keen interest in it and is quite set on finding the artifact no matter what Ravenwood tells her.
Before he knows what's happening, they're off on a secret mission together, but perhaps he's been going about everything all wrong. Maybe Indy is perfectly capable of holding her own. When he decides to trust her, he learns that she's far more resourceful than he ever imagined and the perfect partner for a spy like himself.

This was a wonderful James Bond'esque historical romance. There was action, compelling dialogue and some beautifully written tender moments between the hero and heroine. A book I would definitely recommend.

Featured Author - September 2018

This is a new feature I've decided to add on a monthly basis in order to give some attention to my favorite romance authors. To kick things off, I'm going to feature Caroline Linden who I had the pleasure of meeting in May when I joined her for a book signing in Maryland.

Mia Sosa, Caroline Linden and Sophie Barnes in Maryland, May 2018

We had a great time together - Caroline Linden has a fantastic sense of humor which is definitely reflected in the novels she writes. Her current series, Wagers of Sin, involves some serious high stakes gambling, brilliant dialogue and characters you'll wish you were spending an evening playing cards with. I've read the first book in this series though not the second - alas - since I'm way behind on my reading schedule what with edits and such, but it is definitely on my tbr list.

The first book is called My Once And Future Duke (February 27th, 2018) You can read my review of it HERE and check out the blurb below the stunning cover image:

What happens at the infamous Vega Club …
Sophie Campbell is determined to be mistress of her own fate. Surviving on her skill at cards, she never risks what she can't afford to lose. Yet when the Duke of Ware proposes a scandalous wager that's too extravagant to refuse, she can't resist. If she wins, she'll get five thousand pounds, enough to secure her independence forever.
Stays at the Vega Club …
Jack Lindeville, Duke of Ware, tells himself he's at the Vega Club merely to save his reckless brother from losing everything, but he knows it's a lie. He can't keep his eyes off Sophie, and to get her he breaks his ironclad rule against gambling. It he wins, he wants her—for a week.
Until now.
A week with Jack could ruin what's left of Sophie's reputation. It might even break her heart. But when it comes to love, all bets are off …

The second installment in this series, is called An Earl Like You (August 28, 2018)

When you gamble at love...
When Hugh Deveraux discovers his newly inherited earldom is bankrupt, he sets about rebuilding the family fortune—in the gaming hells of London. But the most daring wager he takes isn't at cards. A wealthy tradesman makes a tantalizing offer: marry the man's spinster daughter, and Hugh's debts will be paid and his fortune made. The only catch is that she must never know about their agreement.
You risk losing your heart...
Heiress Eliza Cross has given up hope of marriage until she meets the impossibly handsome Earl of Hastings, her father's new business partner. The earl is everything a gentleman should be, and is boldly attentive to her. It doesn't take long for Eliza to lose her heart and marry him.
But when Eliza discovers that there is more to the man she loves—and to her marriage—her trust is shattered. And it will take all of Hugh's power to prove that now his words of love are real.
If you hop on over to Caroline Linden's website, you'll discover the following:
Caroline Linden was born a reader, not a writer. She earned a math degree from Harvard University and wrote computer code before discovering that writing fiction was far more fun. Since then, the Boston Red Sox have won the World Series three times, which is not related but still worth mentioning. Her books have been translated into seventeen languages, and have won the NEC-RWA Reader's Choice Award, the Daphne du Maurier Award, the NJRW Golden Leaf Award, and RWA's RITA Award. She lives in New England.

Getting back in the swing of things

The kids went back to school last week, leaves started falling off the trees two days ago, my editor emailed me her review notes for my next release yesterday, so I can no longer pretend I'm still on summer vacation, no matter how much I'd rather doodle in my bujo, lounge about reading romance novels or watching T.V.
Nope.
It is officially time for me to get back to work, which is no easy feat since I've really enjoyed taking time off with my family.
Writing, I always find, takes practice and requires routine. Whenever I take a break from it and get out of the habit of putting down 3-4,000 words per day, it is incredibly hard to get back into the swing of it.
But, I now have a deadline looming on the horizon, so here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to grab a cup of coffee, plant myself in my favorite writing chair and turn off the internet to disable all social media notifications, incoming email distractions etc. Then I'm going to take a deep breath and dive right into chapter one of the monster before me. And yes, it is a monster right now since it needs a complete makeover. But I'm determined. You do not manage to write more than twenty books without being willing to take on an uphill battle - ask any author and I'm sure they'll confirm this. It's part of the reason why most people who say they want to write a book, never do. Because it's hard, but at the end of the day, it's also incredibly rewarding to know that you've built a new world and placed characters in it.
I realize this, and that is the part I look forward to - the goal I know I can reach since I've done it before. I will turn this beast into a beauty, put ribbons on it and make it sparkle. So if you're struggling with your own story right now and trying to make it work, pulling your hair out with discouraged frustration or trying to overcome writer's block, know that you're not alone. I'm in the boat with you, but rather than sit and despair over how far away the shore is, let's pick up our paddles and row. That way we'll get there eventually - little by little - one word at a time.
And here's the interesting part - the truth - at least from my point of view: As soon as I actually start, I get sucked in and the edits miraculously get done by the deadline and sometimes even before. Because an author's persistence goes hand in hand with passion for the stories they write. We immerse ourselves in them and savor the process of turning them into the gems they are destined to be. If we didn't, our jobs would not be possible and we'd find something else to do instead. So take a seat and accept that summer is over and there's work to be done. Open your WIP or start a new one. Give yourself a fixed set of hours per day or daily word count. When you reach it, offer yourself a reward, like an hour with your favorite show, magazine or book, a bubble bath or some other treat. Then take a deep breath and repeat the next day and the day after that. Before you  know it, you'll have reached your goal - that elusive place that seemed so unreachable weeks before. And when you do, don't forget to congratulate yourself for your achievement, because you've done something most people wish they could do, but don't.

- Never Give Up. Just Keep On Writing -

The Governess Game by Tessa Dare

If you're looking for a forbidden love romance between employer and employee with some stellar secondary characters in supporting roles, then take a look at Tessa Dare's latest release!

When Alexandra Mountbatten arrives on Chase Reynaud's doorstep seeking employment as a clock setter, she is shocked to discover that he is the very same man she developed a crush on months earlier after bumping into him at a bookshop. To her surprise, she quickly realizes that their encounter did not impact her the same, for he doesn't even recognize her. Instead, he convinces her to become the governess he so desperately needs for his two unruly charges and in spite of trying to avoid such employment, Alexandra eventually relents, leading to close proximity with Chase and the sort of temptation that could end up breaking her heart.

Chase is a duke's heir and one of London's most notorious rakes. With no intention of ever marrying and producing an heir or forming an attachment, he makes every possible effort to keep his wards and his new governess at arm's length. But Alexandra has something else in mind and Chase soon finds himself taking his wards out for excursions and becoming increasingly involved in Alexandra's life. While he continues to struggle with feelings of unworthiness and pushing the people nearest to him away, he gradually opens his heart and allows himself to do what he dreads the most, which is fall in love.

A wonderful addition to The Duchess Deal and a thoroughly enjoyable read!

Born to be Wilde by Eloisa James

Eloisa James writes beautifully crafted historical romances and Born to be Wilde is no exception.

Lavina Gray and Parth Sterling have been quarreling with each other for years. She finds him appalling... condescending... rude... while he considers her to be shallow. The last thing either of them want is an attachment with each other, but when Lavinia realizes that marrying Parth would save both herself and her mother from ruin, she determines to swallow her pride and propose.

Parth is completely taken aback by Lavinia's insistence they marry. He cannot for the life of him understand why she'd suggest such a preposterous thing and offers an alternative: to find her another fiancé while he romances a widow. The plan seems perfect, the potential outcome less so, for the more time Parth spends in Lavinia's company, the more he realizes that he wants her for himself.

This was a wonderfully written romance. Watching the hero and heroine argue with each other in the most creative ways imaginable was thoroughly entertaining. A story to be savored and one I would highly recommend.

My Once and Future Duke by Caroline Linden

This book has a fantastic beginning. It starts off with a bang and continues on from there, taking the reader on a marvelously romantic adventure of high-stakes card play where the ultimate prize is love.

Ever since being orphaned and then abandoned at a boarding school for girls by her awful uncle, Sophie Campbell has known she would have to rely on herself to get by in the world. But becoming a teacher or a governess doesn't appeal and neither does being a mistress. Instead, Sophie chooses to rely on the gambling skills her father once taught her and after finishing school, she heads off to London to make her fortune. Her goal is four thousand pounds - enough to attract a gentleman suitor, she hopes, and gain the security and comfort of a respectable marriage. But when the Duke of Ware goads her one evening, she forgets her principles for a moment and makes the biggest mistake of her life - a mistake that promises to become the best decision ever.

When Jack Lindeville, Duke of Ware, arrives at the Vega club to pay his brother's debt, he is incensed at discovering said brother is gambling away additional funds. But when he sees the woman against whom his brother is playing, Jack finds himself not only transfixed but inexplicably jealous, and in a moment of utter madness, he wagers with her himself: five thousand pounds against one week of her company. The scandal promises to be ruinous, especially for her, and with Jack's abysmal luck so far, he's sure he stands no chance. But then he wins and his world is turned upside down, because the more time he spends with Sophie Campbell, the more desperate he becomes for her company and for the prospect of  uncovering the truth about this woman whose secrets run deeper than the English Channel.

Splendidly written with wonderful character development, dialogue and wit, this story will keep readers turning the pages late into the night. A story I highly recommend and know fans of historical romance are bound to enjoy.

She was looking for inspiration…

When historical romance author Jane Edwards goes to England on a research trip, she doesn’t expect to travel two hundred years into the past. She also doesn’t expect to be accused of murdering the Earl of Camden’s sister. Presented with few choices, Jane decides the best course of action is to help Camden find the real killer. But the more time she spends in his company, the more she falls for the dashing earl, and the more she hopes for a life with him by her side.

And found love in the most impossible place.

James Sullivan, Earl of Camden, is convinced Jane had something to do with his sister’s murder. Until he learns she lacked the ability to accomplish the feat. Still, her explanation about stopping by his home in the middle of a rainstorm to seek employment, doesn’t add up. And yet, when he offers her the position she supposedly seeks, he discovers the smart resourceful woman she is. Which makes him wonder if marrying his new maid, might be worth the risk of scandal.

He was only supposed to keep an eye on his friend’s sister . . . now he’s about to lose his heart . . .
When Thomas Heathmore, Duke of Coventry, agrees to steer his friend’s inexperienced younger sister through society, he doesn’t expect the lady in question to be so infernally stubborn. Amelia Matthews seems to have little interest in balls or suitors at all. Instead, she intends to open a school, and against his better instincts, Thomas offers to help. Yet somewhere along the line, Amelia ceases to be a simple responsibility . . . and becomes an undeniable temptation.
Since her brother inherited a dukedom, Amelia’s prospects have transformed. But though she’s long been secretly infatuated with Thomas, she refuses to heed the arrogant aristocrat’s advice. If only it were as easy to ignore his heated touch. And as Amelia soon learns, the ton is a minefield, where one moment’s indiscretion can unleash a scandal—or entice her to surrender everything to the duke of her desire . . .

What happens at the infamous Vega Club . . .

The Prince by Katharine Ashe

Soul-shatteringly romantic, this incredible tale is filled with endless amounts of passion, devastating heart-ache and a happily-ever-after for the ages. A true love story that will leave readers smiling with tears in their eyes at the end.

Determined to follow her dream of becoming a surgeon and keenly aware that she'll never be permitted to do so as a woman, Libby Shaw decides to disguise herself as a man. But when a portrait artist known as The Turk recognizes her for the woman she is, she realizes that maintaining anonymity will not be as easy as she initially thought and that she may need an ally to help her with her ruse. Falling in love was never her plan, but not doing so soon becomes as unavoidable as pursuing the education she so desperately craves.

When the woman whose lips have haunted Ziyaeddin for the last three years appears as a man at a surgical lecture, he is intrigued. When she begs him to keep her secret, offering herself as his subject in exchange for his help, he cannot resist the temptation. Especially since he knows what it is to live a secret life, exiled as he is from his homeland, a royal prince disguised as an artist. But he knows responsibility awaits him in Tabir and that he will soon be called on to do his duty, making the fierce attraction he feels toward Libby a dangerous distraction he must resist at all cost.

Katharine Ashe is exceptional. She possesses the extraordinary ability to render complex human emotion on the pages of her novels, and The Prince is no exception. A story that stands apart from the rest in its uniqueness, this is one romance readers will not want to miss and one that I would highly recommend!

Available for pre-order, this title will be released on May 29th 2018

How To Forget A Duke by Vivienne Lorret

Vivienne Lorret's print debut is the perfect blend of deep emotion, compelling characters and the sort of romance that goes straight to the reader's heart.

When Society matchmaker, Jacinda Bourne, takes on the task of finding a wife for the Duke of Rydstrom, she soon suspects that the handsome and infuriatingly gruff aristocrat must have something to hide. Why else would he require an heiress with a large fortune to her name and insist she have no interest in sharing the same residence as him? Determined to investigate in the name of upholding her agency's good name, Jacinda heads to Rydstrom's cliff-side estate, only to wash up on the beach with a serious case of amnesia.

The last thing Crispin needs is an overly inquisitive matchmaker looking into his affairs. But when Miss Bourne is confined to his home and the doctor insists she mustn't travel on account of her health, Crispin finds himself in a bit of a bind. Because he doesn't just have to prevent Miss Bourne from uncovering his greatest secret. He also has to stop himself from falling in love with the cheerful young woman whose presence beneath the same roof as him threatens to be his undoing.

This is a delightful story that keeps the reader wondering how the hero and heroine will ever find their happily ever after right until the last few pages. Of course it all works out perfectly in the end, but getting there is a wonderful ride that no fan of Regency romance will want to miss.

The Earl Next Door by Charis Michaels

A spectacular read that takes the reader on a thrilling journey into the past. This author's incredible skill is evident in the fact that I was completely enthralled by the building of a staircase :)

When American heiress, Piety Grey, flees from her money-grasping mother and step-brothers, she runs as far away as she can - all the way to London. There she buys a house in desperate need of renovation and, discovering her handsome neighbor, Trevor Rheese, Earl of Falcondale, has experience as an architect, she does everything in her power to enlist his help, while he does everything in his power to push her away. So it comes as quite the surprise when Piety realizes she not only likes the grumpy man, but that she might in fact be falling in love with him.

Falcondale has one purpose: sell his home and leave England far behind. But when the beautiful Piety Grey comes crashing into his life, all his plans for the future are swiftly upended. No matter how much he wants to avoid getting involved in her life, he finds himself neck deep in her problems. Especially when her greedy relatives come to pester her. Falling for her was certainly not on his agenda.  So when his own past becomes an immediate threat, she becomes a liability, forcing him to examine his heart and what he really wants for the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was fun and engaging right from the start with compelling characters who spoke with their own distinct voices. Absolutely loved it!!!

Lady Be Reckless by Megan Frampton

Megan Frampton knows how to keep the pages turning and this new installment in her Duke's Daughters series is no exception.

Lady Olivia is hopelessly in love with Lord Carson and she is convinced he loves her in return. So when she proposes to him and he turns her down, she doesn't quite know what to do, besides persevere. She concludes that all she has to do is to prove herself worthy and he'll come around. Which means she needs a project - some way in which to help Lord Carson - and what better way is there than to make a respectable gentleman out of his illegitimate best friend by getting said friend engaged to a lady? Tenacious and optimistic, Lady Olivia is certain she'll succeed, even if it will require resisting a man whose kisses are oh so tempting.

Edward Wolcott knows Society only tolerates him because of his father's wealth. He is keenly aware that he will never be 'one of them'. But when his ailing father asks him to find a bride and Lady Olivia offers to help him do so, he decides to go along with it. For his father's sake, of course. Not because he wants to spend more time with a woman as lovely and tempting as Lady Olivia. She is after all in love with his best friend and would never consider marrying a bastard, which becomes a bit of a problem with Edward must acknowledge that he's done what he never intended to do and fallen in love with the lady himself.

This was a fun read with an incredibly kind-hearted hero who's trying to find his place in a world he doesn't fit into, and a heroine whose tenacity prompts her to fight for what she believes in, including the right to marry the illegitimate man of her dreams.

The Trouble With True Love by Laura Lee Guhrke

A wonderfully romantic escape, The Trouble With True Love, is a captivating read starring a very determined heroine and the sort of hero you wish would come bursting into your office :)

Clara Deverill is in a bit of a bind. With her sister away on her honeymoon and her brother's return to England postponed indefinitely, she has no choice but to run her family's newspaper business. Which wouldn't be so bad if it only consisted of managing the employees. But unfortunately it also means becoming the infamous Lady Truelove, which poses a bit of a problem since Clara has no idea how to offer the necessary advice the Lady Truelove column requires. Until she happens to overhear a private conversation between two gentlemen involving a detailed outline of how to continue bedding a woman without having to marry her. Outraged and inspired, Clara embraces her new persona in an effort to warn all women of men and their devious trickery.

Rex Galbreith is an undeniable flirt and a well-renowned rake who never plans to marry. But then he meets Clara and everything changes. Because this beauty appears to have no interest in him at all while also disliking him for reasons he can't quite seem to figure out. Until he discovers she overheard him telling his friend how to avoid marrying his mistress and that she has in fact written an entire article about it in her newspaper. Furious, he threatens to tell the world that Clara is Lady Truelove, but instead, she turns the table on him and he finds himself not only working with her, but falling for her in ways he never would have thought possible.

This story was thoroughly entertaining, consisting of an interesting plot and strong characters who struggled against the irresistible tug of true love. A read I would thoroughly recommend without question and one which can be read as a stand-alone although the prequel, Dear Lady Truelove, is definitely worth grabbing as well.

A Duke In Shining Armor by Loretta Chase

This is probably the funniest book I have ever read! The descriptions were marvelous, the dialogue hilarious and the romance one of those that just ends up working against all odds.

Bookish wallflower, Lady Olympia Hightower is supposed to marry a gorgeous duke. To everyone's shock and amazement, he has proposed and she is now decked out in her wedding finery and ready to attend the service. It is the right thing to do in order to ensure her family's financial security. She knows this. And yet instead of going to join her groom, she makes her escape through an open window after getting herself thoroughly foxed.

Hugh Philemon Ancaster, Seventh Duke of Ripley, is one of the three dukes the ton has dubbed 'Their Dis-Graces'. Miraculously, his best friend, who happens to share this moniker, has managed to get himself engaged to a respectable young lady, and has charged Ripley with ensuring that the marriage goes off without a hitch. This of course becomes a bit problematic when the bride enlists Ripley's help in climbing over the garden wall and even more so when he begins to develop feelings for a woman he knows he can never have.

Full of humor from beginning to end, this story is sure to delight. Impossible to put down, Loretta Chase has crafted a tale filled with memorable characters and a romance that is bound to go straight to the reader's heart.
